Educational Outreach

NLLSA's Educational Outreach project consists of a lesson plan designed for high school students that presents basic civil rights while challenging them to think critically. Our goal is to provide young adults with the basic legal knowledge and reasoning tools to deepen their understanding of their roles as young members in society at large, and the roles that authority or law enforcement figures take. We hope that this will not only inform high school students of some basic civil rights, but also motivate them to pursue a career in law.

Below are links to the lesson plan, the lesson plan breakdown, and a "Know Your Rights" flyer from the NYCLU:

K-8 Outreach: under our educational outreach project, we also strive to reach students in their elementary education. Our K-8 outreach will target inner cities that have a large Latino population. The lesson plans here will also present civil right issues; this outreach, however, is focused on informing these young students that there are law students, attorneys, and judges who come from the same community and background.

Boys and Girls Club Outreach

The positive impact that we can have on young people in our communities, simply by spending a brief time together with them in any number of settings, can reach far and deep into their lives. While we as law students and aspiring professionals are learning highly-specialized skills, it is important not to forget those that have inspired us on our way. As young people ourselves, we may have derived inspiration from a small and simple gesture of caring, long before an eloquently written opinion would. By volunteering at youth centers like our local Boys and Girls Clubs, we hope to recreate that same inspiration in the next generation, be it in a game of ping pong or a 50-meter dash.
